Father's Day 2009

Mikan has had a small reaction to his chicken pox vaccine. There are about 5 small pox on his injection site. It's supposed to go away in a few days.

We haven't used our AC yet this year, and Mikan is adjusting pretty well. Since our house is on a slab, if he ever gets real warm, we just set him on the ceramic tile to cool him off. Jenna likes the heat. I like that Jenna likes it.

Father's Day 2009, my second. I suggest the book, "Uncommon" by Tony Dungy as a father's day read. He does a good job of telling engaging stories about the good that is going on in the world and reaffirms that good guys can get it done.

For Father's Day I am looking forward to surfing on the lake. Hopefully, there's a little bit of wave action, we'll see.

Question: What are the attributes of a good dad? I have been wondering this. A common statement made by parents is, "Yeah we were really careful with the first kid, then by kid number X, we really let them go." Same dad for both kids, yet apparently different styles.

My number one father effective thought is:
A good dad treats his wife well, makes sure the kids don't kill themselves, and has kids own their own mistakes.
-At a point in the future I may rescind the second part of this statement, but for now I believe it.

What is your

The Henson dads give me a "good dad-ism": A good dad spends time with his kids-not only having a great time with them, and their interests, but listening to them, as well, no matter what they're saying. I appreciate that Chris shows the girls he's interested in what they're saying to him.

Oh, that's kind of scary about the reaction to the vaccine! Hope he feels better soon.

A good dad gets his hands as dirty as the mom. This means, getting up for nighttime feedings (when possible) cleaning up middle of the night throw-ups and diaper accidents, doing trach and g-tube cares, changing diapers. And a good dad is equal parts discipline and fun!

Have a Happy Father's Day John!

A good dad is a dad who sticks around when the times are tough and doesn't walk away. A good dad is physically and emotionally there for his child and the mother of his child. He shares the burdens and the joys equally. He finds joy in the little things and he has the strength and the compassion to "dream new dreams" for his child who decided to do things just a little differently. You, John are a good dad. Never sell yourself short. Not all dads step up to the plate like you have with Mikan. I'm sure Mikan is very proud to call you "Dad" and some day he'll tell you that himself.

Happy Father's Day.

A good dad would sign up with his wife for the South Bend Urban Adventure because I am pretty sure you guys would kill the competition.

this probably isn't appropriate to publish but i had to send it because jastin says it all the time...

"as a father, you know you've done a good job if you manage to keep your daughter off the stripper pole and your son's away from the girls that defied their fathers."
